Prime Minister Narendra Modi will turn 76 on September 17, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) planning a series of programmes to mark his birthday and his 25 years in public office. The BJP has also appealed to people to participate in the ‘Aashirwad Ka Diya’ initiative by lighting earthen lamps at their homes on the evening of September 17. have been born after the country gained independence in 1947. According to the official biography of the Prime Minister, he is the third child of Damodardas Modi and Hiraba Modi and spent his formative years in Vadnagar. His early life included helping his family at its tea stall while pursuing his education. Born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Modi is the first Prime Minister of India to Modi’s political journey began through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), where he worked as an organiser before joining the BJP’s organisational structure. He became Gujarat Chief Minister in October 2001 and remained in office until May 2014, completing more than 12 years in the post. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the BJP won a majority and Modi took oath as Prime Minister on May 26 that year. He returned to office for a second term in 2019 and was sworn in for a third consecutive term on June 9, 2024, following the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The BJP has announced a month-long ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ beginning on September 17, with programmes focusing on public participation, youth engagement and outreach. The party has also linked the celebrations to Modi completing 25 years as a head of government, beginning with his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister. As part of the birthday observance, BJP president Nitin Nabin has appealed to citizens to light an ‘Aashirwad Ka Diya’ at their homes between 6 pm and 7 pm on September 17 and offer prayers for the Prime Minister’s long life and good health. The initiative is being presented by the BJP as a symbolic public participation programme marking the occasion.
