Kani Embankment Breach Triggers Fresh Flood Threat in Jajpur .

Jajpur, 25/09(PPT): Jajpur district is facing a fresh flood threat following a breach in the embankment of the Kani river, a branch of the Baitarani, in Dasarathpur area amid continuous heavy rainfall.

Around 60 feet of the embankment near Patana village under Tarapada panchayat gave way, allowing floodwater to enter nearby agricultural fields and low-lying areas. The Baitarani was flowing above the danger level, with the water level recorded at 18.33 metres at Akhuapada and 9.52 metres at Dasarathpur.

Several low-lying areas have been affected, forcing residents to move towards embankments and other safer locations to take shelter. Continuous rain also led to the collapse of a house wall at Iswarpur village under Beruda panchayat, injuring four persons. Schools and Anganwadi centres in affected areas have been closed as a precautionary measure.

Dr Ratnakar Dalei said the rise in the Baitarani and the embankment breach had resulted in floodwater entering some villages in Dasarathpur. “We are making efforts to plug the breach and prevent further flow of water into the affected areas,” he said.

Dr Dalei had recently entered the floodwater and worked alongside labourers to repair the vulnerable embankment. His efforts were highlighted by several media organisations and drew appreciation from different sections of society.

The district administration and Water Resources Department are monitoring the situation and taking steps to control the breach and minimise the impact on affected communities.
