Bhubaneswar,25/10(PPT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) ₹169-crore data centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar, adding a major technology facility to the country’s digital financial infrastructure.

The inauguration was attended by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Odisha Governor Braj Mohan Ram, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, and Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida.
Spread across 18.55 acres, the facility has been designed to meet the RBI’s critical computing requirements and strengthen the security, resilience and reliability of India’s financial systems. The foundation stone was laid by then RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22, 2023.

The data centre will host mission-critical payment and settlement systems, along with other major RBI technology initiatives. It is expected to provide a secure and reliable technological foundation for the expansion of digital financial services and support the growing demands of India’s digital economy.

The accompanying Cybersecurity Training Institute will focus on specialised training, research and capacity building in cybersecurity and enterprise technology. It is expected to help strengthen technical expertise and improve preparedness against emerging cyber threats across the financial sector.

The location was selected partly for its geographical advantages. Its distance from seismically active zones and high-risk international border areas is expected to reduce exposure to certain natural disasters and geopolitical vulnerabilities, enhancing the resilience of the facility.
Modi arrived at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar at 4.15 pm aboard a special Indian Air Force aircraft. He subsequently travelled by helicopter to Khordha before proceeding by road to the RBI facility in Jatni.

The Prime Minister was scheduled to spend around an hour at the facility before returning to the airport by road for his onward journey at approximately 6.30 pm.
Elaborate security arrangements were made for the visit, with around 2,100 police personnel deployed. Traffic restrictions were also imposed between 5.40 pm and 6.40 pm along the route connecting the RBI facility with the airport to facilitate the movement of the Prime Minister’s convoy.
In a social media post, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the new facility would contribute to Odisha’s development. He also noted that Modi’s visit was his ninth to the state since the BJP government assumed office in 2024.

Majhi said the Jatni facility would be the second of its kind in the country after the RBI’s data centre in Navi Mumbai.
The two facilities at Jatni have been conceived to provide a secure, scalable, resilient and future-ready computing ecosystem for the RBI’s operational needs and the wider financial sector. The data centre is expected to support the uninterrupted functioning of critical financial systems, while the training institute will contribute to developing specialised cybersecurity capabilities.
The project also adds to Odisha’s growing technology infrastructure, with Jatni emerging as the site of an important national financial-sector facility near Bhubaneswar. Its long-term contribution will depend on how effectively the infrastructure strengthens operational resilience, supports digital financial services and develops cybersecurity expertise.

The RBI’s new infrastructure is part of efforts to strengthen the technological backbone of India’s financial system. According to the government’s announcement, the facility includes four data centres certified to the Uptime Institute’s Tier IV standard, while the institute will focus on cybersecurity, enterprise computing, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
