Odisha Police Steps Up Scientific Road Crash Investigation.

Cuttack, /Jajpur,25/08(PPT): Odisha Police, in collaboration with the State Transport Authority (STA), organised a one-day training programme on road safety and scientific crash investigation in Cuttack on Monday, aimed at strengthening evidence-based investigation and preventive measures to reduce road crash fatalities.
The programme was organised under the direction of the Director General of Police, Odisha, and supervised by Dr Satyajit Naik, Inspector General of Police, Central Range. Technical experts from IIT Madras, who serve as consultants to the STA, Odisha, conducted specialised sessions for participating police officers and road safety stakeholders.
The training focused on developing a systematic approach to road crash investigation, including examination of crash scenes, identification of contributing factors, scientific collection and preservation of evidence, crash reconstruction, analysis of circumstances and preparation of investigation reports.
Special emphasis was placed on translating findings from crash investigations into actionable preventive measures. The training highlighted the need to look beyond immediate causes and examine road engineering deficiencies, vehicle-related factors, human factors and other circumstances that may contribute to crashes.
Focus on Data-Driven Road Safety
Road safety remains a key priority for the Odisha Government, with the Police and STA working together on prevention, enforcement, investigation, data analysis and inter-agency coordination.
The STA has undertaken several initiatives to promote data-driven and technology-enabled road safety, including strengthening road safety data management, developing a Road Safety Dashboard and improving coordination among stakeholder departments.
Officials said the integration of reliable crash data with scientific investigation can help identify accident patterns, vulnerable locations and contributing factors, enabling authorities to develop more targeted interventions.
Addressing the participants, Dr Satyajit Naik, IGP, Central Range, said every road crash provides valuable information about gaps that need to be addressed.
“Scientific investigation helps us understand those gaps and enables us to take appropriate preventive measures so that similar crashes can be avoided in the future,” he said.
He stressed the importance of coordination among the Police, Transport Department, road-owning agencies and technical experts to ensure that crash investigation findings are translated into effective preventive action.
Road Safety a Shared Responsibility
The valedictory ceremony was attended by Amitabh Thakur, IPS, Transport Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the State Transport Authority, Odisha, as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Thakur underlined the importance of scientific investigation, technology and coordinated action in strengthening road safety.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Scientific investigation, reliable data and coordinated action by all stakeholders are essential to identify the real causes of crashes and develop effective preventive measures,” he said.
He urged the participating officers to apply the knowledge gained during the training in their field duties and contribute to strengthening Odisha’s road safety framework.
The programme provided officers with practical knowledge and technical insights into scientific crash investigation and reinforced the importance of linking crash investigation with data analysis and preventive road safety measures.
The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participating officers. Participants appreciated the practical orientation of the training and the opportunity to interact with technical experts from IIT Madras.
The initiative reflects the continued efforts of Odisha Police and the State Transport Authority to promote scientific, technology-enabled and evidence-based road safety practices. The collaboration brings together policing expertise, transport administration, technology and academic knowledge to address road safety challenges.
Officials said such capacity-building initiatives would help strengthen a coordinated and preventive road safety framework in the state, with the ultimate objective of reducing road crashes, saving lives and making roads safer for all road users.
