Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 will be celebrated across India on Monday, September 14, marking one of the country’s most vibrant festivals dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity revered as the remover of obstacles, embodiment of wisdom and symbol of auspicious beginnings. Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi, the festival is observed on Shukla Paksha Chaturthi, the fourth day of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. The celebration combines religious devotion with music, cultural programmes, artistic expression and community participation. According to the traditional calendar, the Chaturthi Tithi in 2026 begins at around 7:06 am on September 14. The auspicious period for the installation of Lord Ganesha’s idol, or Sthapana, is expected to be approximately between 11:02 am and 1:31 pm. The ten-day festivities will culminate in Anant Chaturdashi on September 24, when devotees will participate in Ganesh Visarjan. The festival has a particularly prominent place in the cultural life of Maharashtra, where cities and towns are transformed by decorated pandals, artistic idols and devotional gatherings. From intimate household celebrations to grand public installations, Lord Ganesha becomes the centre of worship and community life. The familiar chant of “Ganpati Bappa Morya!” will once again echo through neighbourhoods, marketplaces and public spaces as devotees welcome Bappa with prayers, flowers, sweets and traditional offerings. The celebrations extend far beyond Maharashtra. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the festival is widely observed as Vinayaka Chavithi. Hyderabad’s renowned Khairatabad Ganesh is among the most prominent attractions associated with the celebrations. Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and several other states also observe the festival with distinctive regional customs and traditions. Beyond its religious significance, Ganesh Chaturthi represents an important expression of India’s diverse cultural heritage. The festival brings together families, neighbourhoods, artists, volunteers and community organisations. Traditional rituals are accompanied by music, dance, cultural programmes and social activities, creating an atmosphere in which devotion and public participation go hand in hand. The creation of Ganesha idols has also emerged as an important artistic tradition. At the same time, increasing awareness about environmental protection has encouraged communities to choose eco-friendly idols and adopt more responsible immersion practices.
