Every year on October 2nd, India commemorates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the revered ‘Father of the Nation.’ Born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869, India marks his 155th birth anniversary this year. The title “Mahatma” was first bestowed upon him by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in 1944, and later reaffirmed by Sarojini Naidu in 1947. Affectionately known as ‘Bapu,’ Gandhi is celebrated for his unwavering commitment to non-violence and his pivotal role in leading India’s fight for independence from British rule. On June 15, 2007, the United Nations also recognized this day as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence.
