Koraput,28/10(PPT): Heavy rain and strong winds associated with the threat of Cyclone ‘Arnab’ have affected Pottangi block in Koraput district, prompting the administration to evacuate 132 people to safer locations. Several trees have been uprooted, blocking roads, while continuous rainfall has damaged some mud houses in the area.
Following directions from the Koraput district administration, the Pottangi block administration has constituted a special team to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency response measures. Officials have been deployed across all 14 gram panchayats of the block and are keeping a close watch on weather conditions and vulnerable areas, including through the night.
Four shelter centres have been arranged to accommodate people evacuated from vulnerable locations. According to information available, 86 people have taken shelter at Danduguda, 25 at Talagolur, one at Pukali and 20 at Amphabali. The administration has said that necessary facilities are being provided to those staying at the shelters.
Pottangi has recorded 151.8 mm of rainfall amid persistent wet weather. Light winds have also been reported in the area. The combination of heavy rain and wind has uprooted trees at several locations, obstructing road traffic. Local administration officials and fire service personnel have responded promptly, removing fallen trees and restoring movement on affected roads.
In some areas, prolonged rainfall has washed away portions of mud houses and caused damage to residential structures, raising concerns about the safety of people living in vulnerable dwellings. Fire service teams have been kept on standby to undertake rescue operations, clear road obstructions and respond to emergencies.
The block administration has directed officials to remain alert and maintain regular contact with people staying at the designated shelters. They have also been asked to continuously assess the situation in their respective areas and immediately report any deterioration in weather conditions or the need for further evacuation.
The administration is monitoring rainfall, wind conditions and the status of vulnerable settlements as precautionary measures continue in view of the potential impact of Cyclone ‘Arnab’. Officials have been instructed to provide timely updates and ensure that emergency response arrangements remain in place.
With heavy rain continuing in Pottangi, the administration is prioritising the safety of residents, particularly those living in vulnerable houses and areas exposed to weather-related risks. Further action will be taken according to changes in local conditions.
