BHUBANESWAR,11/09(PPT): Odisha Director-General of Police Vinaytosh Mishra has directed senior police officers to intensify security measures on college and university campuses following reports of violence and student unrest ahead of the students’ union elections scheduled for October 15.
At a video conference with Superintendents of Police (SPs), Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Inspectors-General (IGs) on Saturday evening, the DGP reviewed the law and order situation and election-related security arrangements. He stressed the need to prevent campus violence, ensure peaceful polling and take adequate measures to avert post-election clashes.
Emphasising preventive policing, Mishra directed officers to take proactive steps to identify potential flashpoints rather than respond only after incidents occur. He asked police personnel to maintain regular contact with college authorities, closely monitor campuses and other locations vulnerable to tension, and intervene promptly whenever the situation warrants.
The DGP also instructed officers to deploy adequate police personnel at educational institutions where violence or disturbances are anticipated. He directed senior officers to treat election-related disputes and tensions seriously and take timely action in accordance with the law to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
The directions came amid reports of unrest at educational institutions in several districts. The students’ union election at a college in Jajpur district was cancelled after bombs were allegedly hurled inside the campus last Thursday. Incidents of student unrest were also reported from colleges in Nayagarh, Bhadrak, Balasore and Angul districts.
