Jajpur,28/08(PPT): In an era when political engagement is often measured by electoral campaigns and public appearances, young BJP leader Sanjeeb Kumar Jena has sought to build his political identity through grassroots engagement and public service in Odisha’s Bari Assembly constituency in Jajpur district.
Jena has remained active among people during both times of crisis and celebration, particularly during natural disasters such as floods and cyclones. For him, public service is central to politics, a principle he says should extend beyond political office and positions of power.
His supporters describe him as a grassroots leader who prefers to remain accessible to people and focus on their day-to-day concerns rather than pursue positions and political prominence.
Jena’s role during the recent flood situation in parts of the Bari constituency has further strengthened this perception among his supporters. With several areas affected by inundation and thousands of people facing difficulties, he visited affected villages and participated in relief and community efforts.
During the crisis, Jena was seen working alongside local residents to strengthen vulnerable embankment points using sandbags and assisting in arrangements to deliver dry food and other essential supplies to affected families. He also visited waterlogged areas and interacted directly with residents to understand their problems.
In several places, he reportedly waded through waist-deep water to reach affected households. His interaction with families who had suffered damage to their homes and livelihoods brought him closer to the people, according to those associated with his relief efforts.
Rain and difficult ground conditions did not deter him from continuing his visits to flood-affected areas. His supporters subsequently began referring to him as a ‘friend in times of distress’, highlighting his presence among people during the crisis.
Jena also identifies himself as a committed and selfless worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has been campaigning at the grassroots level to create awareness about various welfare initiatives of the Odisha Government led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, travelling through villages and interacting with residents.
According to Jena, the Chief Minister’s intervention and relief measures during the flood situation in Bari have helped provide assistance to affected people. He believes such initiatives can strengthen public confidence in the government and its welfare-oriented approach.
Meanwhile, Jena’s supporters have formed a group known as ‘Sanjeeb Sena’, which they say is engaged in community service and assistance to people in the Bari region. The organisation has sought to extend its activities beyond political mobilisation by remaining involved in local public-service initiatives.
For his supporters, Jena’s growing appeal lies in his continued presence among people during difficult times. They believe that political leaders may come and go, but a leader who stands beside people during a crisis earns a lasting place in their hearts.
As Bari continues to witness an evolving political landscape, Sanjeeb Kumar Jena is seeking to carve out his own identity as a young BJP leader with a strong grassroots connect—one built less on political office and more on his engagement with people and community service.
