The festival begins with Sajabaja, a preparatory day for cleaning houses and grinding spices. The three primary days are Pahili Raja (the first day), Raja Sankranti (the second day), and Basi Raja (the concluding day). During this period, all agricultural work involving digging or plowing the soil is strictly halted to allow Mother Earth to rest. Raja is a time for rest, joyous community gatherings, and merriment, particularly for young unmarried women. Women take a break from household chores to wear new traditional sarees and adorn their feet with Alta. Colorful ropes are tied to large tree branches, and girls spend the days swinging, playing traditional indoor and outdoor games, and singing joyous folk songs like Banaste Dakila Gaja. A major highlight of the festivities is the preparation of delicious, mouth-watering sweets and dumplings, most notably the famous Podapitha. Neighbors and families exchange these delicacies, fostering harmony and togetherness. The festival officially concludes with Vasumati Snana, a ceremonial bath given to the grinding stone, which represents the goddess Earth. Ultimately, Raja stands out not just as a cultural celebration of the monsoon, but as a progressive tradition that respects female fertility and honors the sacred bond between humanity and nature.
